HamiltonJet - through the innovation and inspiration of Sir William Hamilton - pioneered the development of the commercial waterjet 50 years ago, and today each model is designed and built to the standards of the world's leading certifying authorities. The manufacturing plant includes in-house foundries for casting stainless steel and aluminium, modern machining facilities and extensive testing and inspection procedures.

The current Hamilton waterjet range includes models for power inputs from 150kW to 7000kW, for vessels typically up to 60 meters long. All models include features such as integral intake and transition duct for easy installation, steering and reverse functions. All but the smallest units include fully integrated hydraulic reverse systems with jet driven hydraulic pump, control valves & oil-cooler cast into the jet intake.

HamiltonJet also has an extensive database of case studies and practical information relating to the application of waterjet in modern hull forms. Liaison with designers, builders and operators from the conceptual design stages through to commissioning ensures a Hamilton Waterjet is correctly matched to the hull for every project. From a few known inputs, an in-house computer program, developed by HamiltonJet, can provide an estimate of speed and other operational parameters for planning monohulls.

 



  • EfficiencyAs vessel speed increases waterjets become more efficient compared to conventional propeller systems. Efficiency benefits are due to:• No appendage drag.• Thrust generated by a waterjet is parallel to the direction of travel.• Energy lost from flow rotation is recovered by the stator section of the waterjet. ManoeuvrabilityWaterjet propulsion provides far superior manoeuvrability at both high and low speeds compared to a propeller boat as:• Waterjet thrust is independent of boat speed.• There is no need to change engine rotation to generate reverse thrust. A change from full forward thrust to full reverse thrust only requires the reverse duct to move from fully up to fully down position.• There is sideways thrust capability with two or more jets without the need for a bow thruster. SafetyWaterjets have no exposed high-speed moving components external to a vessel’s hull. DurabilityA waterjet is inherently more durable than conventional propeller propulsion as:• No exposed appendages beneath the hull.• The impeller is protected inside the body of the jet - propulsion gear and is not exposed to damage from floating debris or in the event of grounding.• Maintenance can be predicted and planned in advance. FlexibilityWaterjets offer significant advantages for vessels subject to variable loads as:• Boat speed is determined by hull weight - when the vessel is running light it will travel faster or maintain service speed with reduced power input, resulting in fuel and time savings.• Engines can not be overloaded when vessel is heavily laden - unlike propeller systems which can transfer load to the engine.
